Amparuche: Building an NFT Project to Help Other Latin Artists Join the Space

June 17, 2022

Hello! Who are you and what is your company/project?

Hello, I am Rioger, a Cuban artist residing in Russia, I entered the NFT space as a 1/1 artist in February 2021, interacting with various communities and helping other Cuban artists to join the space.

Amparuche is a collection of 10000 randomly generated NFT portraits of ethereal futuristic beings created from around 2000 different handmade drawings. Amparuche’s vision is to create a strong community of artists and creatives in the Metaverse. Amparuche is an artistic collectible that aims to share and support 1/1 artists, especially from the Latino community. We also teach Hispanic artists web3 and blockchain tools and principles of decentralization in the blockchain.

What’s your backstory and how did you get the idea for the company/project?

Amparuche was born from the desire to create human connections through the community. Its name is due to my experience within the first community of artists in which I participated when I was 16 years old. The name of Amparuche comes from an initiation rite around a legend of the ghost of Amparucha, who used to appear on nights with no skin to torment the sleep of art students at the Eduardo Abela school in Havana. The real Amparucha was an old lady who, after her suicide, donated her land to build the art school. Each NFT reflects a part of the ghost of the lady.

My training in fine arts and experience working as a tattoo artist has helped me develop a very unique style as a digital artist. This collection is an expression of my influences in both art and technology. It’s also inspired in his two NFT 1/1 collections «Gray and its colors» and «Double Game»

Amparuche was born from the challenge of making a collectible in an independent way that sought to expand the planimetric aesthetics of drawing that the collectible projects had last year. I wanted to give it a more pictorial character and focused on the aesthetic and sublime side of art. Amparuche’s style stems from the series Gray and its Colors, a series of 1/1 works that I have been doing, and the desire to make generative art through the process of building the collectible. To do this I made 2000 drawing layers that were mixed using a manipulated algorithm to generate different types of oddities and images.

What problem is your company/project trying to solve?

One of the objectives of the Amparuche project is to help other artists develop their ideas and projects through the free dissemination of the knowledge and tools that we have been discovering throughout this process. We have created the Amparuche Academy youtube channel where we share tutorials in Spanish such as How to make POAPs, Smart contracts (Manifold Studio), massive listing NFTs on GEM, and more. We wanted to focus on sharing this information with the Spanish-speaking community since most of the existing tutorials are in English.

One of the goals of the Amparuche project is to help other artists to spread the ideas of web3 and decentralization focused on 1/1 artists.

We give tools to creators within the Hispanic community to continue supporting and creating using principles of the space like decentralization, governance, and web3 philosophy. We are also building step-by-step ways to make visible the artistic work of creators within the community. We want to erase the borders between 1/1 art and collectibles and use one for the benefit of the other.

What makes your company/project unique?

We believe in the expression of art as a utility. Amparuche is an artistic project that seeks aesthetic quality within collectibles, being valued as serial works of art, as were the pop art series of Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe or Jasper Johns’s American Flags. We want to take the collectible concept to another level.

We have also learned the significance that community gives to this space and the possibilities offered by web3 philosophy. We share them openly with both veterans and newcomers in the NFT space.

Describe the process of launching the company/project.

It all started with Rioger’s curiosity to create a collectible project from scratch, from generating the entire visual to how to deal with a smart contract, deploying on the ETH blockchain, creating the dapp, uploading to IPFS, etc. A long journey full of challenges, little by little the 5 members of the team joined organically, each one from their particularity, @CubanNerd_, @santiso_aissa, @anarejagarcia, @MondejaC.

The release process for the collection was through a friendlist for OG members and starters, then Pre-Sale, and finally Public-Sale.

Since launch, how have you grown your company/project?

Make the project visible through weekly spaces on Twitter sharing with the community, and participating in other projects and spaces of the Latino community such as Arroz con Mango, Paisano, Rox’s space, Thalia, m2c2 (metamariguanos). Interviews on Twitch in El Calles program.

Daily publications of the collection on Twitter and Instagram by the marketing team. Dissemination through exhibitions in the metaverse and we plan to present it at physical NFTs events and festivals. Right now we are preparing an exhibition The Ghosts of Amparucha in one of the galleries of @oncyber Altitude exclusively for the holders of the collection so that they can present not only the collected Amparuches but also their 1/1 work since the largest audience we have are artists. and creators. We also have a collaboration program with artists called Amparuche Artist Collaboration in which the artist can reinterpret one of the NFT from the collection to make a derivative that will be claimed through monthly airdrops for holders. The call for collaboration is open, seasonal collections of 12 NFTs-airdrops will be made, 70% of the royalties will be distributed to the collaborating artists and 30% to the Amparuche funds to continue promoting this type of initiative.

Amparuche is a project that has been growing little by little organically. We conceive it as a long-term project, it evolves as the engagement with the community grows. Today we are receiving new additions to the Amparuche family.

What are the biggest challenges you have faced while building your company/project?

The biggest challenge we have faced is making this project from scratch without any sponsor or initial investor. It has been developed by the same artists and creators of the collection who also have daily jobs as freelancers or employees.

This means that the collection moves slowly, but given the dynamics and objectives that we have in the project, applying principles of transparency and open communication for our holders and the public. We have generated interest in the collection and the information that we share.

Through starting the company/project, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous about the crypto/blockchain “space”?

Decentralized communities can work properly. When it comes to decision-making, communities are more democratic, transparent, collaborative, and proactive. They make it possible for creators to have the governance of their work and not depend on third parties or geopolitical censorship. Our community is valuable because it transforms and mutates the project.

How are you doing today and what does the future look like?

Today we are confident as an art project. We are committed and betting on generating deep ties through long-term collaborations. Our aspirations are transforming according to the initiatives that arise, and we encourage and with the community.

We currently have a collaboration program with artists called Amparuche Artist Collaboration in which the artist can reinterpret one of the NFT from the collection to make a derivative that will be claimed through monthly airdrops for holders. The call for collaboration is open, seasonal collections of 12 nfts-airdrops will be made, 70% of the royalties will be distributed to the collaborating artists and 30% to the Amparuche funds to continue promoting this type of initiative.

We have the Amparuche Academy YouTube channel where we publicly and freely share content such as tutorials on how to use useful web tools for artists and creators who want to carry out a project independently, this channel is mainly focused on Spanish speaking since we have since this type of information is usually disseminated mainly in English.

Our future goals are to buy a space in a metaverse to further develop the universe of Amparuche and become a global community of artists for artists to develop their artistic proposals.

I like to continue building according to the initial principles of the blockchain, decentralization, and provenance.

What have been the most helpful crypto/blockchain books, podcasts, and/or other resources?

One of my references in the space is the Hashlips channel and I constantly listen to the spaces on Twitter about NFT as a source of knowledge.

Hashlips’ channel I learned how to create my smart contract for the Amparuche project, as well as how to build the dapp and upload the files to IPFS. It is a channel that I particularly admire and follow frequently.

What is your advice for someone just starting out in the crypto/blockchain space?

Learn to create your own smart contract, keep creating and improving your craft, form bonds within the communities you are part of, invest in your safety and security, and be honest.

Get to know the space first before investing, take your time to investigate the projects, and do not get carried away by FOMO or by third parties. Take your time to get to know the community dynamics and the tools of the web3 space. Ask people for help when you start with it.

Are you looking to hire certain positions right now?

No at this moment, but let’s see what the future brings us.
